Meeting #13 - 1/30/10
The team made a lot of progress today. The paint brushes came out and now the car is painted, the TV is created, the checkout counter is created, and the recycling bin is painted.
The team also did an instant challenge where they had to build two structures in five minutes. At the end of the five minutes they had to hang one structure from the other. They got points for the height of the first structure and points for the height of the second structure if it successfully hung from the first structure for 30 seconds. The team did very well on this challenge, maxing out the height points for the first and second structure. They figured out some key elements pretty quickly, the second structure didn't need to be very strong since it was hung from the first one. They also built the first structure near the edge of the table which enabled them to dangle the second structure off the edge of the table allowing them to hang the second structure off a lower, stronger point of the first structure.
Finally the team did a quick run through of their performance. I timed and recorded the performance, they still have items to add but right now it is looking good time wise. We have about seven weeks until tournament and right now I think the team is in great shape. I'll be figuring out February meetings soon so watch your email.
You can check out the latest pictures of the teams progress in the photo album.
That's all for this week.

Meeting #12 - 1/23/10
Houston, we have a DI-Bot.
The team has completed the central part of the challenge, their DI bot. This garbage can amazingly sorts garbage from recycling, spits out the recycling and teachers it's owner about the proper way to recycle. The recycling is spit out of the garbage can using a hinge, an inclined plane, a pulley, and a rope. Garbage is actually secretly thrown into a separate compartment inside the garbage can so it is not spit out.
The team also created a list of things it needs for next week, here is the list, please send along any of the items you can next week...
Check out the photo album to see some of the progress.
Great progress is being made!

Meeting #11 - 1/9/10
Our first meeting of the new year. Also our first meeting at LeClair's house.
We started the meeting with some planning, we identified all of the scenes in our performance and all of the props, set pieces, etc. that are required. This did a good job of identifying how much work remains. Then we took a look at the calendar to see about how many meetings we have to complete all of this. There are only about 9 weeks until tournament so roughly 9 meetings.
The team then dove in and started creating some more stuff. We now have a remote control (for a television), the beginnings of a car, a cash register, and a rough start on some other set pieces.
Towards the end of our meeting the LeClair's introduced us to a great game called "Yikerz" (click the name of the game to see it at Amazon). A very cool easy to play game.
Next weekend is the Instant Challenge day at Valley View Elementary School. We are scheduled for the early session, Saturday, January 16th, at 9am. I'll send more details out early next week.
Unfortunately no pictures this week, the batteries in my camera were dead!
